In modern buildings where the thermal envelope has a high level of insulation and therefore thermal performance overheating has become a much more significant issue. The management of internal heat gain is therefore a key issue and solar gain is one of the key sources. 

atBOS Windows & Shading Control allows the control of windows, external shades, blinds or curtains to minimise unwanted solar gain whilst maintaining appropriate levels of ambient light. The system also has the potential to ensure beneficial solar heat gain is maximised in winter to reduce heating loads.

atBOS Windows & Shading Control is appropriate for any scale of building, and includes control devices and software.

Key Aspects of Windows & Shading Control

atBOS uses a range of pre-programmed strategies to control windows and shading systems in a building. These range from simple zone based occupancy and temperature sensing, through to advanced Machine Learning (ML) which has potential to account for predicted weather patterns such as cloud cover. 

  • Occupancy based control, shades are closed when spaces are unoccupied if it is beneficial to prevent overheating.
  • Due to the holisitc nature of the platform, windows can be closed automatically when the heating is on.
  • Control of both shading and windows is used as part of a passive cooling strategy
  • Daylight control where shades are part closed if ambient light levels exceed a user defined threshold
  • Improve convenience and safety through automating hard to reach windows or blinds
  • Prevent glare on screens and monitors
  • Use Responses to understand if a blind motor may have failed and report requirement for maintenance.

Control protocols

atBOS software will control most blind and curtain motors using the following methods:

  • Volt free contact, open/close relays for proprietary systems
  • Direct relay control or 0-10V analogue signals for actuators
  • Connection to third party proprietary control systems through industry standard open protocols such as Modbus and BACnet.
  • Direct native mesh wireless communication.
